United Methodist guaranteed appointments

January 11, 2012

It’s hard to answer a question like this in only 140 characters so I’m moving the question here. My curiosity more than anything has caused me to ask:

What’s your opinion on ending job guarantees for ordained elders in good standing?

Right now the way the legislation reads, those who are not appointed would be placed into the status of Transitional Leave. Transitional Leave has a 24 month time limit so by the end of that time something else more permanent would have to happen with the clergyperson’s status (either back to an appointment, or moved to another status). Clergy are not paid by the church during the transitional leave time so would need to find their own income. I believe they could still receive health benefits (if they paid for them). They remain a member of the annual conference during this time so they have a vote and can serve on annual conference committees.
